Literature Review Evaluation Meeting

This was the meeting on which my progress so far is being evaluated and the literature review discussed.
I found that meeting extremely helpful because a lot of questions were raised about the further, more practical, development of the project and it is a real chance to feel where you are standing.
The literature review itself went well in my opinion. I was able to answer the questions I was asked and bring clarity to the written format I handed-in.
On top of that, this meeting set end to the research phase and it is now time for progress in the practical part of the project. Even though the literature review helped clarifying the area that the project is in, there are a lot of considerations that has to be made from now on when planning and executing "The Urbanite".
For a start - what feeling do I want convey through the installation? What do I want it to discuss? I already have the answer of this question - I want it to deal with the relation between the human and the city. I do not want it to be about dominance but more about the mutual dependence the two have - the city is defined by the human and vice versa.
From this come and all the other questions that need to be tackled. How do I convey that feeling. The general answer to that would be through the digital art installation I am creating. But at this stage that is not enough - and the question becomes more of a "How the digital art installation will convey that message?" - I am not quite certain what the answer of that is still but I am working on it.
Along with that come the questions about interaction - how is the installation going to react to different users. In a recent conversation, a truthful point was made that each person would have a different approach to an installation of such kind and will come out of it with a different experience. Even more variables come here when talking about user's perceptions of "The Urbanite" - age, personal experiences, social experiences, relationship status, and so on and so forth. Briefly said - everything that e person is and has been until this point of his/her life will influence their perception of the installation. That is why the interaction needs to be carefully planned and executed according to those variables - the installation should react differently to different combinations of those variables.
Even though I still do not have the solutions to those matters, I find it very important that the questions have been raised. I think I should start creating something, even completely wrong and unusable in order to activate the stage of prototyping and creating.

Literature Review

I have not been posting for a while but I have been busy writing the literature review for my Honours Project.
I tried to cover all the aspects of installations that I found relevant to the project I am doing and I ended up writing about installations in general, then digital installations and then digital installations using light.
I put examples of artists' work to illustrate the types I was talking about. While writing the literature review I came to realize that when discussing installations, especially art installations, there is not much theory out there and the right way to go would be discussing relevant artists and installations in particular and then summarizing or pointing out differences.
One thing that made the research particularly difficult was the labeling. And what I mean by that is that different sources call the same things in a different way that they seem to decide for themselves. It can be really confusing to try gather information and analyze it when even the naming of it has not been commonly established.
However, for the purposes of the literature review, I chose to use labels that seemed to be the most commonly understood and used.
In my hand-in I also included initial designs of what my vision for this installation is. They were basic drawings showing the installation and what happens when viewers interact with it. The basic idea is of a city responding to the people through light.

Urbanite

This is the title of my project -an interactive installation, using the properties of light to transform live video and sound into visually captivating outlook of “Urbanite”.
I want to reflect on the interaction between people and their environment. Not only how a person perceives his surroundings but also how the surroundings perceive the person.
I am currently investigating installations in general and more specific light installations - what has been done, what concepts and technologies are being used, what development in the area has appeared in the last few years.
I am writing my reflections on that in a literature review discussing the different aspects I need to investigate before creating my installation - concept, technology, development methods, testing.

Inspiration

I am now at the beginning stage of developing my Honours Project, and brainstorming is mostly what is happening.
I am currently looking at interactive installations that have already been created and the idea behind them. Even though I am planning to use Arduino for my project, I am now looking at installations based on their concept, rather than the technology being used for their creation.
I came across some really interesting pieces that I am going to post links to.

Those are just examples of the work I am looking into at the moment and I will keep posting everything that I find interesting and my comments on it.
